ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE

2000

  • The National Arbor Day Committee (NADC) received $20,000.00 and $6,053.74 in sponsorship for the construction of the plant nursery structures at schools from Texaco West Indies Ltd., and the British High Commission, respectively. Nu-way Hardware also donated horticultural tools to the Committee.

  • The Committee’s objective of sensitizing the populace about Arbor Day and the importance of planting trees was enforced with the assistance of the Starcom Network, who provided valuable air-time.

  • A Guide To Tree Planting The Committee was able to print and distribute its booklet - A Guide To Tree Planting. This booklet was distributed to schools and the public.

  • Many shade and fruit trees were distributed through the Road Runner Programme, with the assistance of the Starcom Network. The company also facilitated tree give-aways to listeners who called in and correctly answered environmentally related questions.

  • For the first time since the re-establisment of Arbor Day, a series of activities were planned to commemorate the event. As such, the respective committee members held open days at various locations, which were well attended by school students.

  • A poster competition was held as part of the celebrations for Arbor Day 2000 and the Committee received fifty-eight entries from students between the ages of seven (7) and eighteen (18) years. The winning schools in the various categories were noted as follows.

  • 7 - 9 year Category :

    2nd and 3rd Place - Welches Primary School
    Special Mention - Welches Primary School

    10 - 12 year Category:

1999

  • The Schools' Nursery Development Project was established, and sixteen primary and secondary schools were initially selected to participate in the project.
  • Major sponsorship for the Schools' Nursery Development Project was received from Texaco, Eastern Caribbean Ltd., the British High Commission and sponsorship of tools was received from Nu-Way Hardware.
  • One thousand, seven hundred and four (1,704) trees were planted at public areas, schools, communities and also within the Scotland District, St.Andrew.
  • Educational tours were conducted at the NCC's Plant Nursery and the Soil Conservation Unit's Plant Nursery.

1998

  • Plants were randomly distributed to several householders with assistance from a local radio station.
  • Planting was done at several public places and schools.
  • A coastal revegetation project was conducted at Barclays Park in the parish of St. Andrew.
  • Several hundred trees were planted at schools and communities.
  • An educational booklet was prepared and distributed to the schools across the island.

1997

  • A revegetation exercise was conducted to stabilize the sand dunes at Walkers, St. Andrew.
  • Thirty-five primary and secondary schools were involved in National Arbor Day.
  • Several local plant nurseries exhibited their interest through the donation of trees.
  • Several hundred plants were planted at schools, within the communities, and at other public areas.
