World Turtle Day was initiated in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, a turtle and tortoise rescue organization founded in 1990 in Malibu, California. The group brings attention to turtle conservation issues and highlights ways each of us can help protect these gentle but jeopardized animals.

In Barbados, the Barbados Sea Turtle Project is based at the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill Campus). For the last 20 years, they have been involved in conservation of the endangered marine turtle species that forage around and nest on Barbados, through monitoring and conservation of nesting females and hatchlings, research, education and public outreach.

Our Social Commitment..

The National Conservation Commission is committed to adding social value in all its endeavors. We are of the firm belief, that the growth of any nation is dependent on the growth of the society as a whole. Ensuring that a nation’s recreational requirements are met is of primary concern, especially in a hectic work environment. The Commission’s social commitment to the Barbadian community is well established and its mandate in this regard is wide and varied.
