KING GEORGE V MEMORIAL PARK

King George V Memorial Park The late Major Peebles, who had married a Barbadian, and lived at Bayley's Plantation, gave an area of land to the people of St. Philip especially and the people of Barbados generally, to form a park and a playing field for children. It was christened the King George V Memorial Park in memory of the late King George V.

When it was initially opened, it was one of the main places of entertainment for the working class, for there were dances held at the park almost every month. After the change from the Vestry system to Local Government, it was neglected until it was taken over by the NCC, (formerly called the Parks and Beaches Commission). This park is still well patronised, especially on bank holidays and on weekends, by picnickers, and it is still utilized by the people in the vicinity on a daily basis.
